My research shows that my gr,gr grandfather, Daniel Wade Hurley, was in the NC 2nd Regiment Infantry, Company A. My records also show that he was a drummer and he died on May 3, 1863, which makes me believe he may have been killed at the Battle of Chancellorville.
Our family has never known where he was actually buried so they have all been assuming that he died on the battlefield and did not have a marked grave.

Charles Smith was born in 1832 in Peters Creek, Stokes County, NC. He was the 2nd oldest son of John Smith & Elizabeth 'Betty' Brown. Charles enlisted in Company A, 2nd Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 1 Sep 1862 at the age of 30. Regimental records indicate that Charles deserted from his regiment on 12 Oct 1862. Charles likely rejoined an infantry regiment in Alleghany County, but it is possible his religious beliefs (regular Baptist) prevented him from fighting. I would appreciate any additional information about his military records. Charles married Sarah 'Sally' Mabe on 22 August 1851 in Stokes County, NC. He is my 3rd greatgrandfather thru his son Robert Lee Smith (1869-1950) of Alleghany County, NC.

Noah Smith was born in 1847 in Stokes County, NC. He was the youngest son of John Smith & Elizabeth 'Betty' Brown. Noah enlisted in Company A, 2nd NC Infantry Regiment on 1 September 1864 at the age of 17. I am unsure of his military record. Noah Smith married Sallie Ann Mandring after the civil war. Noah is the brother of my 3rd great grandfather, Charles Smith who died in 1888 in Alleghany County, NC.

Peter Smith was born 13 Dec 1828 in Stokes County, NC. He was the son of John Smith & Elizabeth 'Betty' Brown. He died 22 July 1904 in Stokes County, NC. Enlisted as a Private in Co A, 2nd NC Infantry Regiment on 1 September 1862 at the age of 27. I am unsure of his military record, discharge date, etc. Peter Smith married Annie Slaugther some time prior to his Civil War enlistment. Peter is the oldest brother of my 3rd greatgrandfather Charles Smith who died in Alleghany County, NC in 1888.

Ransom S. Boyette was my great, great, grandfather and he enlisted as a Private in the NC 2nd Infantry on 27 May 1861 from Wilson County, NC.

He was born 1839 in Surry County, NC. He enlisted on September 18, 1861 in Surry County, NC and mustered into Company B, NC 2nd Infantry on same day. He POW February 8, 1862 at Roanoke Island, NC and then paroled February 21, 1862 at Elizabeth City, NC. Detailed September 30, 1863 as a division Wagoner through February 1865. Hospitalized June 4, 1864 at Danville, Virginia with vul sclopeticum arm. Transferred June 21, 1864 place not stated. He was surrendered on April 9, 1865.

Any info on Calvin Lambert would be a great help

Enlisted in Company C at Goldsboro in June 1861. Age 52. Recorded as 'Absent Sick' in October 1862. Carried as 'sick in hospital' through April 1863. His last muster roll reports him as 'Sent to hospital in Winchester October 20, 1862 - supposed to be dead'.

Color guard. Killed at Chancellorsville. Described in the following manner in the Regimental History of North Carolina troops . . .
A short time before the battle of Chancellorsville the color- guard of the regiment was reformed, consisting of a sergeant and a corporal from each company. Kindred Lewis was the sergeant selected. Every member of the regiment looked with pride upon this splendid young soldier and his companions who stood beside him. Tall, erect, in action like the herald Mercury, he bore high the blue saltier on its field of crimson. When the command 'Charge!' was given, he rushed forward to mount the wall of the enemy's defense. In that moment every member of the color-guard was shot, and Lewis, who had leaped upon the wall, fell forward on the outer side, killed instantly. The regiment returned sadly to camp.

Enlisted in Wayne County May 29, 1861.

Was taken prisoner at Sharpsburg.

Wounded at Gettysburg July 3, 1863. Henry was captured during the retreat from Gettysburg at Waterloo, Pennsylvania on 5 JUL 1863 among the sick and wounded. Confined at Fort McHenry, he was paroled for transfer and sent to Fort Delaware on 9 JUL 1863.

'This company was formed of men transferred from Captain Jesse Burtz's Company (Cherokee Georgia Mountaineers) which was divided by S. O. No. 163, A.&I.G.O. dated 26 SEP 1861. It afterward became Company D, 21st Battalion, North Carolina Infantry. Being composed of men from Georgia, it was subsequently transferred to the 21st Regiment, Georgia Infantry by S. O. No. 84, A.&I.G.O. dated 11 APR 1864 and became (New) Company E of that regiment.' John W. SHOEMAKER enrolled on 22 JUL 1861 at Concord, Dawson County, Georgia in Captain Smith's Company, Independent Regiment, Wise Legion. As noted above, this company evolved into Company D, 2nd Battalion, North Carolina Infantry. The entire company was captured at Roanoke Island, North Carolina on 8 FEB 1862. The POWs, including John, were released as paroled prisoners of war at Elizabeth City, North Carolina on 21 FEB 1862. This release on parole predates the Dix-Hill Cartel signed between the two War Departments on 22 JUL 1862, but these men were eventually declared exchanged and returned to duty after several months at home. The 2nd Battalion, North Carolina Infantry was engaged at Gettysburg in July 1863. John W. SHOEMAKER was captured during the retreat at Waterloo, Pennsylvania on 5 JUL 1863. He was sent to Fort McHenry and forwarded to Fort Delaware on 9 JUL 1863 probably arriving the next day. John was transferred from Fort Delaware to Point Lookout on 18 OCT 1863 (his Point Lookout record shows him arriving 15 OCT 63, so one of these records was copied in error). He remained at Point Lookout from October 1863 until 13 FEB 1865 when he was paroled for a 'humanitarian' exchange, and delivered to Confederate authorities at Coxes Landing on the James River near Richmond in the two day period 14/15 FEB 1865. There were 2,051 paroled Confederate POWs delivered from Point Lookout over this two day period. The final record in John's file shows that he was present at Camp Lee (a camp for paroled and exchanged prisoners in Richmond) on 17 FEB 1865. Only 7 officers and 50 men were surrendered in April 1865 and John W. SHOEMAKER was not documented as being one of them. This suggests that he may have been furloughed home or perhaps he just went home on his own initiative. The primary condition for being selected for these 'humanitarian' releases was that a Union army surgeon examine the men and only those deemed 'likely to be unfit for at least 60 days' were selected for delivery. Most of those delivered were examined in the Receiving & Wayside Hospital (G. H. No. 9) at Richmond and distributed to Richmond area hospitals for further treatment as needed. There is no hospital record in John's file, so he may have been deemed fit for duty by Confederate authorities.

Private Drury Meeks Walls was born on 19 December 1843 in Forsyth County, GA. He enlisted in Company D, 2nd Regiment North Carolina Infatry on 28 Nov 1861 and fought with this regiment until his capture at Gettysburg on July 4, 1863. He was exchanged on July 18 and returned to his unit and fought until he was again captured and sent to Point Lookout POW camp in October 1863. He was agin exchanged and returned to his until until his transfer to Company E, 21st Regiment, Georgia Infantry on 11 Apr 1864. He fought with this unit through the remainder of the war until their surrender at Appomattox. His father, Nace Walls, served as a Private in Company E, 24th Regiment Georgia Infantry. He died on 26 November 1900 in Gainesville, GA. He was married to Martha Louisa Gillespie and had five children: John Wesley, Emery J, Drury M, Martha, and Sara A.

Presley Lemuel Bennett resided in Anson County, North Carolina and enlisted in Wake County on August 15, 1862. He was wounded at South Mountain, Maryland on September 14-15, 1862. He was wounded again at Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863. Presley was reported as absent on company muster rolls through April 1, 1864. He was captured st Strasburg, Virginia on October 19, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland until released after taking the Oath of Allegiance on June 4, 1865. Documents indicate that in 1870 he lived in Wadesboro, North Carolina (Anson County). Presley married Laura Bowman on 8-5-1875. They resided in Anson County, North Carolina and had 2 children that were twins. William White Bennett and Harriet Lilly Bennett were born on 10-8-1876. Presley Lemuel Bennett died 8-16-1917 and is buried in the Bennett family plot in Eastview cemetery in Wadesboro. Laura Bowman Bennett (his wife) died 6-24-1907. Presley's children and spouses are also buried here as well. We continue to look for information regarding our Confederate ancestor and would appreciate any information or photos of the company in hopes of finding out more about Presley Lemuel Bennett.

John is buried in the Confederate Section, at Long Island National Cemetery (Cypress Hills)in Brooklyn, New York in the same grave as my great- great uncle Jasper Newton Stowe (23rd North Carolina Infantry).

Robert was 20 years old when he enlisted on 16 May 1861 and elected as 3rd Lieut. Promoted to full 2nd Lieut. 13 July 1862. Oct 1861 finds him sick in the hospital at Fredricksburg, Va. Under fire at Battle of Chancelorsville Va. July 1-3 was in the battle at Gettysburg. 9 April 1865 unit surrender at Appomattox and swallowed the 'Yellow Dog' He is related thru marriage of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed.

George was the eldest of five (5) brothers who were in Co. G, 2nd NC Regt. Two died, one was captured twice. George was wounded six times in four battles: Fredericksburg-shoulder, Gettysburg-left leg, Spotsylvania-forefinger of left hand shot off and wounded in left leg, Cedar Creek-right wrist and right leg. Taken captured in Petersburg on April 3, 1865. Released from Point Lookout after taking the Oath of Allegiance on 17 June 1865. Would name one of his two sons Robert E. Lee Rhodes.

Machlus 'Mack' Talton, born 1823 in Johnston Co., NC. Elisted 5/21/61 at age 38. Wounded 7/1/63 at Gettysburg. Wounded at Farmville, VA 5/6/64. Served in Lee's Army of Northern VA, Jackson's 2nd Corp, Rode's Div., Ramseur's Brigade, 2nd NC Regiment,Co. H led by Major D.W. Hurtt.'The 2nd NC Infantry participated in more than fifty various engagements during it's career.' Calvin Parsons was born in 1841 in Ashe County, NC. He was the son of William Parsons & Ruth Sexton. Calvin left Ashe County for Raleigh in 1860 to enlist in the Confederate Army. Calvin Parsons enlisted in Co. K, 2nd NC infantry on Sept. 1, 1862. He was killed in battle at on 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA. He was the brother of my 3rd great grandfather John Hardin Parsons.

Major Daniel Washington Hurtt was born in New Bern, NC, on June 18, 1825. Early in 1861, he entered the service of the Confederate States as Captain of the Beauregard Rifles, assigned to Company I, 2nd Regiment, NC militia under the command of Colonel Charles C. Tew.
He served with the regiment on the Rappahannock and in North Carolina until the opening of the campaign of Richmond in 1862. He served in General Anderson's brigade during the Seven Days campaign and then at Mechanicsville, Cold Harbor, and Malvern Hill He was next in battle at South Mountain and Sharpsburg, where he was shot in the face, losing the teeth on one side of his upper jaw, and taken prisoner by the enemy and sent to the hospital at Boonsboro. About ten days later he was exchanged, and upon his recovery, he rejoined his regiment in time to take part in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, during which he was recognized for distinguished service in command of the brigade skirmishers, and was promoted to Major on the field by General Ramseur. On the first day's fight at Gettysburg, he was struck on the lower part of the breast by a minie ball, which, after penetrating a package of letters and a pocket bible, inflicted such injuries that he was incapacitated for further service. He reported for duty in May, 1864, but upon examination was granted a furlough, and in August, 1864, he was compelled to resign on account of continued disability. He made his home at New Bern in 1865, then removed to Tarboro, back to New Bern in 1877, and then to Goldsboro in 1886, where he remained until his death in 1805. He was buried in Cedar Grove cemetery in New Bern.
He married Maria E. Tisdale in 1846, who was the daughter of Captain William Tisdale, 18th US Infantry during the War of 1812. He had three children who survived the war: 1) Private William Tisdale Hurtt, 67th NC Infantry, 2) Private Stephen F. Hurtt, 3rd US Infantry, Spanish-American War, and 3) Henry T. Hurtt. After the death of his first wife, he wedded Kate L. Dewey. A brother of Major Hurtt, Seaman Edward H. Hurtt, served during the war on the Confederate blockade-runner, CSS Merrimac.
